FeganScott is launching an investigation into the Abbott Laboratories Employees Credit Union (ALEC) data breach that occurred during an August cyberattack against the Illinois-based credit union.
According to a notice that the ALEC filed with the Attorney General of Maine, the company discovered that an unauthorized party accessed an employee’s email account and acquired sensitive personally identifiable information belonging to customers. ALEC has not yet confirmed the full scope of the breach, but the company has started sending out data breach notification letters to affected individuals.

What happened?
Per the notice that the ALEC filed with the Attorney General of Maine, the company recently learned that an unknown, unauthorized third party gained access to one ALEC employee’s email account. Following an initial investigation into the situation, ALEC determined that the unauthorized third party likely acquired certain personally identifiable information belonging to customers contained in the targeted employee’s account.

ALEC has not confirmed the exact types of personally identifiable information that were accessed, but as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor, this information typically includes the following:
- Name
- Personal address
- Social Security number
- Telephone number
- Email address
- Bank account numbers and information
