On November 4, 2024, FeganScott filed a class action lawsuit against MoneyGram, alleging the financial services provider failed to protect customer data, allowing a data breach that enabled an unauthorized party to illegally obtain personal and financial information belonging to an untold number of customers.
According to the complaint filed in the United States District Court of the Northern District of Texas, MoneyGram became aware of the data breach in late September but did not publicly announce the incident until October 7. In its announcement, the company disclosed that the information stolen during the breach included Social Security numbers, government identification documents, bank account numbers, and transaction information, among other highly sensitive data. As of the filing, MoneyGram has yet to report the full scale and impact of the cyberattack.
The complaint attributes the data breach to MoneyGram’s insufficient security measures. It claims that the company lacks the safeguards necessary to protect the highly sensitive data it requires customers to provide to access its services.
The lawsuit seeks to recover damages for the plaintiffs’ monetary losses due to the breach.
