On March 29, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel in South Carolina granted final approval to a class settlement between public water systems and 3M that will provide funds to public water systems across America to help remediate the harm that PFAS, also known as ‘forever chemicals,’ has caused. The settlement will result in payments for the benefit of public water systems between $10.5 and $12.5 billion.

As you may have seen on our social media channels, this follows final approval of a $1.2 billion settlement between public water systems affected by ‘forever chemicals’ and other major chemicals companies DuPont, Chemours and Corteva.

Combined, these historic settlements deliver up to $13.7 billion to public water systems facing PFAS contamination. The funds provided through these settlements will help affected systems address contamination, and put necessary testing technologies in place, to ensure that Americans have access to safe, clean drinking water.
